Elena stopped expecting information from official channels and focused on what she could verify independently: court filings, which were public; property records, which were public; corporate registration documents, which were public across most states; and the steadily expanding community of amateur radio operators, retired engineers, and concerned citizens who had been energized by the Millhaven story into comparing notes about anomalous signals they’d been cataloguing, in some cases for years, without knowing what to do with the information.
This community was a phenomenon she had not expected. It had a name now — The Frequency Hunters, which had started as a Reddit thread and expanded into a coordinated network with its own signal-logging protocols and its own internal verification system developed by Walt Kowalski and two retired engineers from Ohio and Nevada respectively. They were not investigators; she was careful to explain this to them regularly. They were documentarians. They logged and submitted. The investigation was federal. The journalism was hers and Osei’s and Gina’s. The community’s role was to provide the data that only scale could gather. It was the most efficient distributed research operation Elena had ever seen, and it had been built entirely by people who had been scanning the static for years, hoping that what they were hearing was not just noise. Turns out, for some of them, it wasn’t.
