THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE MORNING STAR Chapter 13

The Last Voyage

The passengers gathered on the deck.

Thousands of them. Tens of thousands. They had been trapped for years, decades, centuries. Now they were free.

They wept.

They laughed.

They embraced.

Elara watched from the bow, her hands on the railing, her eyes on the horizon.

The first captain stood beside her.

“What will you do now?” the old woman asked.

Elara was silent for a long moment.

“I don’t know.”

“You could stay. The ship needs a captain.”

“I don’t want to be a captain.”

“No one does. That’s what makes a good captain.”

Elara looked at her parents.

They were standing together, holding hands, watching the sea.

“They’re free,” she said.

“They’re free.”

“Will they be happy?”

The first captain was silent for a long moment.

“I don’t know. But they have a chance. That’s more than they had before.”

The ship sailed toward the horizon.

The water was blue, the sky was bright, the wind was warm. The passengers stood at the railing, watching their freedom approach.

Elara’s father walked to her.

“We’re going home,” he said.

“Where is home?”

He looked at the horizon.

“Port Morning. It’s the only home I’ve ever known.”

“Will you be happy there?”

He smiled.

It was a real smile, warm and bright and full of love.

“I will. Because you’ll be there.”

Elara shook her head.

“I’m not coming.”

Her father’s face fell.

“What?”

“The ship needs a captain. Someone has to stay. Someone has to hold the light. Someone has to keep the heart beating.”

“That’s not your responsibility.”

“Yes, it is. I chose this. I accepted this. I will not run from it.”

Her mother walked to them.

“Elara—”

“I love you, Mom. I love you, Dad. But I can’t leave. Not yet. Maybe not ever.”

Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“Then we’ll stay with you.”

“No. You’ve been trapped long enough. You deserve to be free. You deserve to live.”

“We deserve to be with you.”

Elara took her mother’s hands.

“You will be. In here.” She touched her chest. “In your heart. In your memories. In the love you carry.”
