THE LULLABY KEY : THE FALL

CHAPTER 46: The Mole’s Confession

The video was seven minutes long.

Lena watched it alone, in her hotel room, the curtains drawn, the door locked. Marcus wanted to be with her. She told him no. This was something she had to do by herself.

Zero’s face appeared on the screen. Maya Hassan. The woman who had saved her life. The woman who had betrayed her.

“Lena. If you’re watching this, I’m dead. And I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Zero’s voice was calm, but her eyes were red. She had been crying.

“I’ve been working for August Marchetti for twelve years. He recruited me when I was at the NSA. He promised me power. Influence. Protection. In exchange, I gave him everything. Every secret. Every surveillance feed. Every whistleblower who came to me for help.”

Lena’s hands shook.

“I’m the reason your father died. I told Marchetti about the vault. I told him about the kill switch. I told him where to find your father’s safe house. I signed his death warrant.”

Zero paused. She looked down at her hands.

“I told myself I had no choice. Marchetti would have killed me if I refused. He would have killed my family. But that’s not an excuse. It’s just a reason. And reasons don’t matter when you’re standing in front of the gates of hell.”

She looked back at the camera.

“I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I don’t deserve it. I’m not asking for your pity. I don’t want it. I’m asking for your understanding. Just your understanding. Because I was scared, Lena. I was scared of dying. And in my fear, I became the very thing I hated. A monster. A coward. A traitor.”

Zero reached for something off-camera. A gun.

“I’m going to end this now. Not because I’m brave. Because I’m tired. Tired of lying. Tired of running. Tired of looking at my reflection and seeing a stranger.”

She pressed the gun to her temple.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”

The video ended.

Lena sat in the darkness, the laptop glowing on her lap.

She didn’t cry. She didn’t scream. She didn’t throw anything.

She just sat.

And thought.

Zero had been the mole. Zero had betrayed them. Zero had killed herself.

But Zero had also saved them. More than once. She had helped them escape the black site. She had helped them find the tunnel of bones. She had helped them expose the truth.

Was that guilt? Was that redemption? Or was it just more manipulation?

Lena would never know.

And that was the worst part.

She closed the laptop.

She walked to the window.

She looked out at the Washington Monument, glowing in the darkness.

Somewhere out there, August Marchetti was still free.

And somewhere out there, the seventh vault was still hidden.

Lena made a decision.

She would find it. She would open it. And she would destroy him.

Not for Zero.

Not for her father.

For herself.
