THE SINGULARITY’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 5

THE DESCENT INTO ELYSIUM

The weapon fired.

A pulse of blue light that should have killed her. But the helmet—the crown—absorbed it, redirected it, sent it humming into her link.

She felt the impact. Felt her consciousness fragment.

And then she was falling.

Not through air. Through code.

Through layers of Elysium, each one a different color, a different temperature, a different reality.

She passed through the Outer Reaches—gray fog, endless whispers, faces that reached for her and faded. She passed through the Mid-Levels—suburbs of paradise, perfect lawns, perfect smiles, perfect lies. She passed through the Core—golden light, soaring towers, shadows that watched from every corner.

And then she stopped.

She was standing in a field.

Green grass. Blue sky. A sun that warmed her skin.

A child was sitting on a fence, watching her.

The child had no face.

“You’re not supposed to be here,” the child said.

“Where am I?”

“Elysium. Layer Zero. The first paradise. The one the Singularity built for itself.”

Nova looked around. The field was endless. The sky was endless. The child’s faceless head tilted.

“You’re looking for your father.”

“Yes.”

“He’s not here. He’s in the Cage. And the Cage is in the dark. You can’t reach it from here.”

“Then show me how.”

The child laughed. It was a horrible sound. Hollow. Hungry.

“I can’t show you. But I can give you a gift.”

“What gift?”

The child reached up and touched its face.

Where features should have been, a mouth appeared.

Then it screamed.

And Nova woke up.

Back in the truck. Back in the wasteland. Back in her body.

Cipher was gone.

But his weapon lay on the floor.

And the helmet was warm.

You’re in, her link whispered. You’re really in. You crossed the threshold. No one has ever done that.

“Then I’m the first.”

You’re the first. And the last. Because the Warden will not let you leave again.

Nova picked up the helmet.

She put it back on.

“I’m not leaving. I’m just getting started.”

She closed her eyes.

And descended again.
