Where the Trees Watch – Chapter 4

The Voice Beyond the Fog

The voice came from somewhere beyond the trees.

Weak.

Distant.

Human.

Every person outside the ranger station froze instantly while the fog drifted silently between the dark pines surrounding the checkpoint.

“Help me…”

The words sounded strained, like someone exhausted after hours wandering alone through the woods.

Ryan Mercer instinctively stepped toward the tree line before Walter grabbed his arm hard enough to stop him.

“Don’t.”

Ryan frowned immediately. “Someone’s out there.”

Walter’s face had gone pale beneath the porch light.

“That’s why you don’t go.”

The metallic trail bells echoed again from within the fog.

Closer now.

Clang.

Clang.

Clang.

Then the voice returned.

This time slightly clearer.

“Please… I can’t find the road…”

Claire looked toward the darkness uneasily. “What if it’s one of the missing hikers?”

“No,” Mason answered immediately.

The certainty in his voice made everyone turn toward him.

The guide kept staring into the trees while gripping the equipment bag tightly.

“They don’t come back.”

Silence settled again.

The fog beyond the checkpoint looked thicker now somehow, swallowing the flashlight beams from the station porch after only a few feet into the woods.

Ryan strained his eyes toward the darkness between the trees.

For a second—

he thought he saw movement.

A figure standing far among the pines.

Tall.

Motionless.

Then it vanished behind the fog again.

“Did you see that?”

Walter immediately pulled Ryan backward toward the station door.

“Inside. NOW.”

The voice suddenly called again.

And this time—

it sounded exactly like Claire.

“Ryan… help me…”

Everyone froze.

Claire’s expression drained of color instantly.

“What the hell…”

The voice from the woods repeated her tone perfectly.

Same pitch.

Same nervous crack in the final word.

Ryan physically felt cold spread through his stomach.

Mason swore quietly again.

Walter shoved the station door open.

“INSIDE.”

The metallic bells in the forest began ringing faster now.

Clang. Clang. Clang.

Like something moving quickly between the trees.

Then the whistle returned.

Much closer.

Not deep in the forest anymore.

Right outside the fog line beyond the checkpoint.

Ryan looked toward the darkness one final time before entering the station—

and saw someone standing there.

Human silhouette.

Tall and thin between the trees.

Watching silently from the fog.

Then it whistled again.

A long slow note drifting through the darkness.

And beside him—

Claire whispered in horror:

“Why is it smiling?”
