All Are Welcome Here – Chapter 15

Beneath the Roots

The cavern fell completely silent after Thomas spoke.

No humming.

No footsteps.

Only the distant ringing of bells somewhere above the earth and the faint crackling glow from the lanterns held by the townspeople.

Elias Ward stayed perfectly still within the darkness beside Mara while cold fear tightened through his chest. The way Thomas stood there smiling calmly made everything feel worse somehow.

Like none of this frightened them anymore.

Like they had accepted it long ago.

Thomas slowly turned toward the deeper tunnel descending beyond the cavern wall. His lantern light illuminated old stone stairs leading farther underground beneath thick roots twisting through the ceiling rock like veins.

“The forest is restless tonight,” he said quietly.

One of the lantern walkers beside him nodded softly.

“The eighth bell approaches.”

Mara leaned closer toward Elias in the darkness.

“We need to move before they block the lower paths.”

Elias frowned. “Lower paths to where?”

Mara hesitated.

Then softly:

“To the place where the ceremonies began.”

The sentence settled heavily inside him.

Before he could ask more, a new sound echoed through the underground tunnels.

Breathing.

Slow.

Wet.

Coming from somewhere below the stone staircase beneath the roots.

Every lantern walker immediately fell silent again.

Thomas lowered his head slightly almost like someone hearing a sacred prayer.

Then the breathing grew louder.

Closer.

Elias stared toward the dark staircase while every instinct inside him screamed to run.

Something enormous moved beneath the tunnels below.

Not human.

Too heavy.

The roots hanging from the ceiling trembled softly as whatever approached scraped slowly against stone far beneath them.

Mara’s grip tightened around Elias’s arm painfully.

“Don’t look at it directly,” she whispered.

“What IS it?”

Mara never answered.

The breathing below the staircase deepened.

Then something softly rang beneath the earth.

A bell.

Not distant this time.

Right below them.

Thomas smiled wider immediately.

“The Listener wakes.”

Cold terror spread through Elias instantly.

The lantern walkers began lowering themselves slowly onto their knees around the cavern floor one by one. Lanterns rested beside them while every smiling face turned toward the staircase descending beneath the roots.

Praying.

Waiting.

The breathing below continued rising slowly through the tunnel.

Elias’s thoughts raced violently.

None of this felt human anymore.

Not the town.

Not the ceremonies.

Not whatever waited below those stairs.

Then a woman among the kneeling townspeople suddenly whispered:

“It heard the outsider.”

Every lantern flame dimmed at once.

The breathing stopped instantly.

Silence crushed the cavern.

Then—

something moved beneath the staircase.

Huge shadows shifted far below the roots while the stone steps trembled faintly beneath slow approaching weight.

Elias physically stepped backward.

And accidentally kicked a loose glass bottle lying near the wall.

The bottle rolled across stone loudly through the silent cavern.

Every lantern walker turned toward the sound immediately.

Thomas slowly lifted his head.

Smiling.

“There you are.”

At the exact same moment—

the thing beneath the staircase inhaled sharply.
