Falling for Two Hearts- Chapter 19

The Truth Hailey Saw First

The problem with guilt was that it followed people everywhere.

Lucas Reed felt it walking back to his dorm after kissing Ava Monroe.

Felt it while brushing his teeth.

Felt it while staring at the ceiling at two in the morning replaying everything over and over inside his head.

And somehow the guilt became worse because the kiss with Ava felt real enough to change something permanently inside him.

God.

That terrified him.

Because before tonight, some small part of Lucas still hoped confusion would eventually disappear on its own.

Now there was no confusion left.

Only consequences.

Rain continued falling softly outside the dorm windows while campus lights glowed faintly through darkness.

Lucas closed his eyes briefly.

And immediately thought about Hailey again.

The sadness in her smile.

The photograph she handed him.

The way she already seemed to know she was losing him long before he fully admitted it to himself.

God.

How did somebody survive being loved that honestly?

His phone buzzed suddenly beside him.

Lucas grabbed it automatically.

A message from Ava.

Ava:
You okay?

The softness of the question physically hurt his chest.

Because somehow even after everything, her first instinct was still concern for him.

Lucas stared at the message for several seconds before answering.

Lucas:
Not really.

Three dots appeared instantly.

Me neither.

God.

The honesty between them lately felt dangerous.

Another message followed.

I still don’t regret it though.

Lucas closed his eyes briefly after reading that.

Because neither did he.

And maybe that made all of this worse.

The next morning, Blackwood University looked silver beneath cloudy skies and leftover rainwater.

Lucas arrived at literature class emotionally exhausted already.

The second he walked inside the room, his heartbeat stumbled painfully.

Hailey.

She sat near the window exactly like always, sunlight filtering softly through loose strands of golden-brown hair while she scrolled absently through her phone.

For one terrible second, Lucas almost forgot how to breathe.

Because suddenly the weight of what happened last night crashed back through him again.

He kissed Ava.

And Hailey still didn’t know.

God.

The guilt became unbearable instantly.

Hailey looked up the moment he approached the desk.

Immediately something in her expression shifted.

Not because Lucas said anything.

Because she noticed him.

Really noticed him.

That was the terrifying thing about people who loved deeply.

They recognized emotional changes before words ever arrived.

“You look different,” she murmured softly.

Lucas froze slightly.

“What?”

Hailey stared at him for another second.

And slowly…

the color drained from her face.

God.

She knew.

Maybe not every detail.

But enough.

The realization hit Lucas hard enough to make his stomach twist painfully.

Hailey looked away first toward the classroom windows while her fingers tightened slightly around the edge of her notebook.

Silence stretched heavily between them.

Then quietly, almost like she was scared to hear the answer, she whispered:

“You kissed her.”

There it was.

No point lying now.

Lucas sat beside her slowly while guilt hollowed through his chest.

“Yes.”

The word shattered something invisible between them instantly.

Hailey inhaled softly afterward.

And for the first time since meeting her…

Lucas saw genuine heartbreak reach her eyes completely.

Not controlled sadness.

Not acceptance.

Pain.

Real pain.

God.

His chest physically hurt seeing it.

“Hailey—”

“When?”

Her voice trembled slightly now.

“Last night.”

A faint laugh escaped her suddenly.

Not happy.

The kind people make when reality hurts too much to process normally.

“Wow,” she whispered.

Lucas looked down immediately because he couldn’t stand the devastation on her face.

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop apologizing.”

The sharpness in her voice startled both of them slightly.

Hailey closed her eyes briefly afterward before forcing herself calmer again.

Then softer:

“Please stop saying sorry like it fixes things.”

God.

She was right.

Nothing about this could be fixed anymore.

Silence filled the classroom while students slowly entered around them completely unaware that Hailey’s heart was quietly breaking beside the window.

Lucas turned toward her carefully.

“You deserve honesty.”

Hailey laughed weakly again.

“Well congratulations.” Her eyes shimmered slightly now. “I got it.”

The pain inside her sarcasm nearly ruined him emotionally.

Lucas leaned closer instinctively.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

Hailey finally looked back at him then.

And God.

The heartbreak in her expression felt unbearable.

“But it still happened.”

The truth inside those words settled heavily through his chest.

Because yes.

It did.

No matter how guilty he felt.

No matter how complicated everything became.

He kissed Ava because he wanted to.

And somewhere deep down, both of them already knew what that meant.

Hailey looked down at her notebook quietly while blinking quickly against tears threatening her composure.

Then softly, almost to herself:

“I kept hoping I was wrong about you.”

Lucas frowned slightly.

“What does that mean?”

Hailey swallowed hard before answering.

“The way you looked at her.” Her voice cracked softly. “Like she was already yours emotionally before either of you admitted it.”

God.

The accuracy of that statement nearly stopped his heartbeat.

Because suddenly Lucas realized something devastating.

Hailey watched him fall for Ava in real time.

Probably before he fully understood it himself.

And somehow she still stayed.

Still loved him anyway.

That realization hurt almost as much as losing her.

The professor entered the classroom moments later, but neither of them paid attention.

The air between them felt too heavy now.

Hailey wiped quickly beneath one eye before whispering:

“Do you love her?”

The question shattered directly through him.

Because honestly?

He didn’t know yet.

Not fully.

But the terrifying part was—

he could imagine it.

Lucas opened his mouth carefully.

Nothing came out.

And somehow that silence answered enough again.

Hailey nodded slowly afterward like she finally understood everything completely now.

God.

Watching acceptance settle across her face hurt worse than anger ever could’ve.

Then quietly, heartbreakingly softly, she whispered:

“I think I lost you the first time she made you feel understood.”

The sentence physically ached inside his chest.

Because maybe she was right.

Maybe this story was never really about choosing between two girls.

Maybe it was about the exact moment Lucas Reed stopped feeling lonely beside Ava Monroe.

And maybe nobody ever truly stood a chance against that afterward.

Hailey looked toward the classroom windows while tears finally slipped quietly down her face.

Then softly:

“I really loved you, you know.”

God.

Lucas felt something inside himself break hearing that.

Because he believed her completely.
