NO WAY BACK – Chapter 8

The Forest Beyond the Shore

Nobody moved after seeing the figures between the trees.

The storm still raged above the island, rain crashing through the dark forest while waves slammed violently against the cliffs behind them. Cold wind tore across the shoreline carrying the smell of wet earth, saltwater, and something rotten drifting from deeper inside the woods.

And there, standing silently between the fog-covered trees, were shapes watching them.

Tall.

Motionless.

Human-shaped.

God.

Selene Cross grabbed Nora’s arm immediately.

“Tell me those are normal people.”

Nobody answered.

Because deep down…

they all already knew they weren’t.

Lightning flashed across the island.

For one bright second, the figures became visible.

Pale skin.

Long soaked clothing hanging unnaturally still despite the wind.

Faces hidden beneath shadows.

Then darkness swallowed the forest again.

And the figures were gone.

Kai stared toward the tree line breathing hard.

“Nope.” His voice sounded shaky now. “Absolutely not.”

Jace Holloway looked back toward the ocean.

Or where the ocean used to be visible.

Fog had swallowed almost everything now.

The ferry was gone completely.

Only black water remained beyond the cliffs.

No lights.

No rescue boats.

No way back.

God.

The title of the ship suddenly felt less like a name and more like a warning.

Rain soaked through Nora’s clothes while her heartbeat slowly steadied enough for her brain to start working again.

“We can’t stay on the beach.”

Kai looked horrified.

“You wanna go INTO the murder forest?”

“You wanna stay exposed on the shoreline?”

Fair point.

Another distant scream echoed somewhere deep inside the island.

Not human.

Something answering through the woods.

Selene visibly flinched.

“We need shelter.”

Rowan Pierce pointed upward toward the cliffs.

“The resort.”

Everyone looked.

High above the forest, partially hidden by fog and rain, the ruined building still glowed faintly against the darkness.

Orange lights flickered through broken windows near the upper floors.

Somebody was there.

Or something.

Neither possibility felt comforting anymore.

Still…

it was the only place offering any kind of shelter.

Jace exhaled slowly.

“We head for the resort.”

Kai looked like he wanted to argue.

Then thunder exploded above the island hard enough to shake the trees around them.

And somewhere behind the fog-covered shoreline—

something moved in the water.

Massive.

The waves shifted strangely for several seconds before settling again.

Kai immediately changed his mind.

“Okay yeah, mountain horror mansion it is.”

The group began moving toward the forest carefully.

Every step across the muddy shoreline felt heavier somehow, exhaustion and fear finally crashing into their bodies after the nightmare ferry ride.

Nora kept glancing toward the tree line constantly.

The figures were gone now.

But she still felt watched.

God.

The island itself felt alive somehow.

Like it noticed them arriving.

The moment they crossed into the forest, the atmosphere changed again.

The rain sounded quieter beneath the thick trees overhead while fog drifted heavily between the trunks, limiting visibility to only a few feet ahead.

Everything smelled damp and ancient.

The path leading uphill looked abandoned for years, cracked stones disappearing beneath overgrown roots and dead leaves.

And strangest of all—

there were no animal sounds.

No birds.

No insects.

Nothing.

Only the group’s footsteps and distant thunder above the trees.

Kai noticed too.

“This place is way too quiet.”

Nobody disagreed.

Selene wrapped her arms tightly around herself while walking beside Nora.

“I hate islands.”

“That feels late to realize.”

“I mean spiritually.”

Another flash of lightning illuminated the forest briefly.

And for one horrifying second—

Nora saw somebody standing beside the path ahead.

A little girl.

Pale.

Wearing an old white dress soaked by rainwater.

Her dark hair covered most of her face while she stood completely motionless between the trees.

Nora stopped walking instantly.

“There’s someone there.”

Everyone turned.

Lightning vanished.

Darkness returned.

The little girl disappeared.

Kai looked toward Nora carefully.

“What did you see?”

Before she could answer—

a child’s laughter echoed softly through the forest.

The entire group froze.

The sound came from somewhere deeper uphill.

Then again.

Closer.

A little girl laughing quietly between the trees.

Selene’s face lost color immediately.

“No.”

The laughter stopped abruptly.

Then silence returned.

God.

Nora’s skin crawled with fear now.

Because no child should’ve been alive out here.

Not on this island.

Not after what happened on the ferry.

“We keep moving,” Jace said firmly.

Nobody argued.

The group climbed higher through the forest while fog thickened around them. Occasionally strange shapes appeared between the trees only to vanish seconds later.

Sometimes Nora thought she heard whispering nearby.

Sometimes footsteps behind them.

Once, Rowan swore he saw somebody walking parallel to them deeper in the woods.

But every time they stopped—

nothing remained there.

Only fog.

Then suddenly Kai grabbed Nora’s shoulder hard enough to stop her walking.

“Don’t move.”

His voice sounded deadly serious now.

Nora’s stomach tightened immediately.

“What?”

Slowly, Kai pointed downward.

The ground ahead wasn’t mud.

It was a hole.

A massive hole hidden beneath leaves and darkness.

Nora stepped closer carefully and looked down.

God.

The pit stretched deep underground beneath the forest floor.

And inside—

there were bones.

Human bones.

Dozens of them.

Some old enough to crumble apart.

Others horrifyingly fresh.

Selene gagged immediately behind them.

“Oh my God…”

Then Nora noticed something else near the bottom of the pit.

Movement.

A pale arm slowly disappeared deeper into the darkness underground.

Like something inside the hole had just crawled away.

Everyone backed away instantly.

“Keep moving,” Rowan whispered quickly. “NOW.”

Nobody needed convincing anymore.

The group hurried uphill through the forest faster now while panic settled heavier inside every breath.

And somewhere behind them—

from deep beneath the ground—

came the sound of something crawling upward through the pit.
