STARFALL CHRONICLES : THE AWAKENING

Chapter 6: The Heart of the Void

The path ended.

Aris and Nova stood at the edge of a vast chamber, its walls lost in shadow, its floor lost in light. The ceiling was invisible, swallowed by darkness. The air was thick and warm, humming with energy, pulsing with life.

And in the center of the chamber, a figure.

Not a woman. Not a man.

A child.

Younger than Nova, smaller than Nova, more fragile. His dark skin was pale, his dark hair was tangled, his dark eyes were hollow. He wore a simple white tunic, torn and stained, and his bare feet were pressed against the light.

He was the heart of the void.

He was the one who had been waiting.

“Hello, sister,” he said. “Hello, dreamer. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Nova stepped forward.

Her small hands were shaking.

“You’re not my brother. My brother is part of the network now. My brother is healing.”

The boy smiled.

It was a sad smile, small and tired and full of years.

“I am your brother in the way that matters. We were born together. We were created together. We were sent into the world together.”

“Why?”

The boy looked at the light beneath his feet.

At the shadows.

At the darkness.

“Because the void was dying. Because the void needed two hearts. Because one heart was not enough.”

Aris stepped forward.

The boy’s hollow eyes flicked to her.

“Dr. Aris Thorne,” he said. “The one who survived the Perseus. The one who heard the whispers. The one who did not break.”

“You know me.”

“I know everyone who travels the void. The void is my body. The whispers are my voice. The dreamers are my dreams.”

“Why did you kill my crew?”

The boy was silent for a long moment.

“Because they were in the way. Because they were blocking the network. Because they were preventing the void from healing.”

“You murdered them.”

The boy’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t mean to kill anyone. I didn’t know what would happen. I was just a child. I was just trying to save my home.”

Nova walked toward him.

Her small feet left no prints on the light.

“I forgive you,” she said.

The boy’s eyes widened.

“What?”

“I forgive you. For the Fracture. For the deaths. For the loneliness. I forgive you.”

“You can’t forgive me. You don’t have the right.”

“I have every right. I’m your sister. I’m your other half. I’m the light to your dark.”

The boy’s tears fell onto their joined hands.

“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”

“No one deserves forgiveness. That’s what makes it a gift.”

The chamber began to change.

The shadows lightened. The cold warmed. The darkness faded.

The boy looked around.

“What’s happening?”

“The void is healing,” Nova said. “The Fracture is closing. The heart is beating again.”

“Because of you?”

“Because of us.”

The boy looked at Aris.

At her steady eyes.

At her hopeful heart.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

“Don’t thank me. Thank your sister. She’s the one who never gave up.”

The boy closed his eyes.

The light consumed him.

And when it faded, he was gone.

Nova stood alone in the chamber.

Aris walked to her.

“Where did he go?”

Nova looked at the light beneath her feet.

At the hope.

At the future.

“He’s part of the void now. Part of the network. Part of the dream.”

“Will you see him again?”

Nova smiled.

It was a real smile, warm and bright and full of love.

“Every time I dream,” she said. “Every time I hope. Every time I love. He’ll be there. Watching. Waiting. Hoping.”

They walked back to the Odyssey together.

The path was bright now, the walls warm, the silence soft.

Aris held Nova’s hand.

“Are you okay?” Aris asked.

Nova nodded.

“I’m better than okay. I’m home.”
