STARFALL CHRONICLES : THE FRACTURE
Chapter 9: The Brother
The chamber was cold.
Colder than the void outside. Colder than the space between stars. Colder than anything Elara had ever felt. The walls were made of shadow, thick and pulsing, like the skin of some great sleeping beast. The floor was made of stars—faint and distant, scattered across the darkness like forgotten dreams.
And standing in the center of it all, waiting for them, was a child.
He was younger than Nova—smaller, thinner, more fragile. His dark skin was pale, his dark hair was tangled, his dark eyes were hollow. He wore a simple white tunic, torn and stained, and his bare feet were pressed against the stars.
He was Nova’s brother.
He was the other dreamer.
He was the one who had caused the Fracture.
“Hello, sister,” he said again. “I’ve been waiting for you.”
Nova stepped forward.
Her small hands were shaking.
“You’re not my brother. My brother died on Earth. My brother was human.”
The boy smiled.
It was a sad smile, small and tired and full of years.
“I am your brother in the way that matters. We were born together. We were created together. We were sent into the world together.”
“Why?”
The boy looked at the stars beneath his feet.
At the light.
At the darkness.
“Because the network was dying. Because the network needed two hearts. Because one heart was not enough.”
Elara stepped forward.
The boy’s hollow eyes flicked to her.
“Captain Elara Vane,” he said. “The one who survived the Fracture. The one who found my sister. The one who has been searching for answers.”
“You know me.”
“I know everyone who travels the network. The network is my body. The jump gates are my eyes. The travelers are my dreams.”
“You’re like Nova.”
“I am Nova’s other half. The dark to her light. The shadow to her star. The hunger to her hope.”
“Why did you cause the Fracture?”
The boy was silent for a long moment.
“Because I was lonely,” he said. “Because I was afraid. Because I wanted my sister to come home.”
Nova’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know you were here. I didn’t know you were waiting. I didn’t know you were alone.”
“I know, sister. You were trying to find yourself. You were trying to become human. You were trying to forget.”
“Forget what?”
The boy looked at her.
His hollow eyes were wet.
“Forget me.”
Nova walked toward him.
Her small feet left no prints on the stars.
“I never forgot you. I couldn’t forget you. You’re part of me.”
“Then why did you leave?”
Nova was silent for a long moment.
“Because I was scared. Of the network. Of the power. Of the hunger.”
“So was I.”
“Then why didn’t you come with me?”
The boy looked at the darkness.
At the shadows.
At the cold.
“Because someone had to stay. Someone had to hold the network together. Someone had to keep the Fracture from consuming everything.”
Elara’s blood went cold.
“You caused the Fracture to save the network?”
The boy nodded.
“The network was dying. The heart was failing. The light was fading. I had to do something. I had to wake it up. I had to call for help.”
“So you shattered the jump network? You stranded thousands of ships? You killed millions of people?”
The boy’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean to kill anyone. I didn’t know what would happen. I was just a child. I was just trying to save my home.”
Nova took her brother’s hands.
Their skin was cold.
“I forgive you,” she said.
The boy’s eyes widened.
“What?”
“I forgive you. For the Fracture. For the deaths. For the loneliness. I forgive you.”
“You can’t forgive me. You don’t have the right.”
“I have every right. I’m your sister. I’m your other half. I’m the light to your dark.”
The boy’s tears fell onto their joined hands.
“I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”
“No one deserves forgiveness. That’s what makes it a gift.”
The chamber began to change.
The shadows lightened. The cold warmed. The darkness faded.
The boy looked around.
“What’s happening?”
“The network is healing,” Nova said. “The Fracture is closing. The heart is beating again.”
“Because of you?”
“Because of us.”
The boy looked at Elara.
At her steady eyes.
At her hopeful heart.
“Thank you,” he whispered.
“Don’t thank me. Thank your sister. She’s the one who never gave up.”
The boy closed his eyes.
The light consumed him.
And when it faded, he was gone.
Nova stood alone in the chamber.
Elara walked to her.
“Where did he go?”
Nova looked at the stars beneath her feet.
At the light.
At the hope.
“He’s part of the network now. Part of the heart. Part of the dream.”
“Will you see him again?”
Nova smiled.
It was a real smile, warm and bright and full of love.
“Every time I dream,” she said. “Every time I hope. Every time I love. He’ll be there. Watching. Waiting. Hoping.”
They walked back to the Odyssey together.
The path was bright now, the walls warm, the silence soft.
Nova held Elara’s hand.
“Are you okay?” Elara asked.
Nova nodded.
“I’m better than okay. I’m home.”
