THE LAST STARWEAVER : THE SUNDERING

Chapter 11: The Burning Heart

The valley was silent.

The stone pulsed with pale light, its symbols blazing, its power surging. Theron lay in Zephyra’s arms, his face pale, his breath shallow, his gray eyes fixed on hers.

“I love you,” he had said.

The words echoed in her mind, louder than the whispers, brighter than the light.

She had never been loved before. Not really. Her mother had loved her, yes — but her mother was dead. The village had feared her. The world had rejected her. She had grown up believing that she was unworthy of love, incapable of love, undeserving of love.

But Theron loved her.

A man who had been carrying guilt for a thousand years. A man who had lost everything. A man who had every reason to be cold and bitter and broken.

He loved her.

And she loved him.

She had not known it until this moment. But she did. She loved him.

“I’m not going to let you die,” she whispered.

Theron smiled.

It was a sad smile, small and tired and full of years.

“You can’t control that. No one can.”

“Then I’ll try.”

“That’s all any of us can do.”

She laid him gently on the grass.

She stood.

She walked to the stone.

The Burning Heart blazed before her, its light hot and cold at the same time, its power humming in the air. She could feel it calling to her — not like the Broken Star, not like the Weeping Stone. This was different. This was hungry.

Give, it whispered. Give and receive. Sacrifice and be reborn.

Zephyra placed her hands on the stone.

The symbols blazed.

The light exploded.

She was standing in a field of fire.

Not the cold fire of the void. Not the warm fire of the sun. A different fire. A fire that was love.

It burned around her, consuming the grass, the trees, the sky. But it did not hurt her. It warmed her. It held her. It loved her.

And in the center of the fire, a figure.

Seraphina.

The first Starweaver stood before her, her silver hair flowing, her gown of starlight shimmering. Her eyes were not void-dark now. They were brown. Warm. Human.

“Hello, Zephyra,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“You’re not real.”

“I’m as real as your love. As real as your sacrifice. As real as your hope.”

“Why are you here?”

Seraphina stepped closer.

“To help you. To guide you. To remind you of what you are.”

“What am I?”

Seraphina took her hands.

“You are the last Starweaver. The only one who can close the door. The only one who can save the world.”

“But I’m also a woman who loves.”

“Yes. That is your strength. Not your weakness.”

Zephyra looked at the fire.

At the love.

At the light.

“The trial wants me to give up my love. To sacrifice it to the stone.”

“The trial wants you to give up your fear of love. Your fear of loss. Your fear of being hurt.”

“Same thing.”

“No. Fear is the enemy. Love is the weapon.”

Zephyra’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know how to love without fear.”

“Yes, you do. You’ve been doing it your whole life. You loved your mother. You loved Theron. You loved the world, even when the world hated you.”

“But it hurts.”

“I know. Grief is love with nowhere to go. But you have somewhere to go now. You have a door to close. A world to save. A future to build.”

Zephyra looked at the fire.

At the light.

At the love.

“I’m ready.”

The fire exploded.

Not the cold fire of the void. Not the warm fire of the sun.

A different fire.

A fire that was everything.

It filled her. Flooded her. Consumed her.

She felt her heart crack and heal. Her soul break and mend. Her mind shatter and reform.

She saw Theron’s face. His smile. His tears. His love.

She saw the day they met. The day he saved her. The day she realized she was not alone.

She loved.

She hoped.

She let go.

And then—

Silence.

She opened her eyes.

The stone was dark.

The light was gone.

The valley was quiet.

But she was different.

Stronger. Braver. More alive.

Theron stood at the edge of the clearing.

His gray eyes were wet.

“You did it,” he said.

“I did it.”

“How do you feel?”

Zephyra walked to him.

She took his hands.

“I feel like I can love.”
