THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE MORNING STAR Chapter 35

The Release

The heart room was bright.

The walls of glass were clear, the floor of stars was glowing, the pulse was strong. Elara placed her hand on the heart’s surface.

It was warm.

“I need to release a passenger,” she said.

The heart pulsed.

Which passenger?

“Eleanor Cross. She has been here for seventy years. Her family is waiting.”

The family is always waiting. The ship does not release passengers lightly.

“I know. But this is different. Her granddaughter came to find her. Her granddaughter needs her.”

The heart was silent for a long moment.

Then release her.

Elara returned to the room.

Eleanor was sitting on the bed, Lily beside her, their hands intertwined.

“It is done,” Elara said. “You are free.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. Thank your granddaughter. She’s the one who found you.”

Eleanor stood.

Her legs were weak, but Lily held her.

“Where will you go?” Elara asked.

Eleanor looked at the window.

At the sea.

At the light.

“Home. Wherever that is.”

“Port Morning?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Port Morning. It’s the only home I’ve ever known.”

Elara led them to the deck.

The fog had parted. The sea was blue. The sky was bright.

A small boat waited at the side of the ship — wooden and simple, with a single sail and a single oar.

“This will take you to shore,” Elara said.

Eleanor hugged her.

“Thank you, Captain.”

“Thank you for waiting.”

Lily hugged her too.

“Will I ever see you again?”

Elara smiled.

It was a sad smile, small and tired and full of years.

“Every time you dream. Every time you hope. Every time you love. I’ll be there. Watching. Waiting. Hoping.”

She helped them into the boat.

The sail caught the wind.

The boat drifted away.
