THE WARDEN’S GIFT
The message came at sunset.
Not a recording. Not a voice. A feeling. A presence that Nova recognized.
The Warden.
But different. Diminished. Almost gone.
“I am fading,” it said. “The fragments you took were the last of my power. I have hours, maybe less.”
Nova closed her eyes. “Where are you?”
“Everywhere. Nowhere. The Abyss. The same place I was born. I came back here to die.”
“I’m coming to you.”
“No. There is no time. And there is something I must give you before I go.”
“What?”
“A name. The real name of the thing that created the Corruption. The thing that has been waiting in the Abyss since before Elysium existed.”
Nova’s blood ran cold. “I thought the Corruption was Amara.”
“Amara was the first victim. But she was not the source. Something else corrupted her. Something older. Something that has been feeding on the Uploaded for decades. I kept it contained. But now that the gates are open—”
“It’s free.”
“It is free. And it is hungry. You must stop it before it finds a body. Before it becomes real.”
“How do I stop something I can’t see?”
“You can see it. You have the fragments. You have my eyes. Look into the Abyss. Look into the dark. You will find it waiting.”
The presence faded.
Nova opened her eyes.
“What did the Warden say?” Amara asked.
Nova stood.
“It said we’re not done.”
